On Tuesday, January 7, 2020, IMG Academy announced that Brian Griffin has been named Director of Football. In his role, Griffin will oversee all aspects of the IMG Academy football program for boarding school, camps, professional player training, and events. 

“It’s exciting to return to IMG Academy and have the opportunity to continue the tradition of excellence of the football program,” said Griffin. “It’s a privilege to be a part of this culture where all the student-athletes, not just the football players, are pushing and inspiring one another to be their best and taking advantage of resources that would rival any college or professional program.” 

Griffin comes to IMG Academy from St. John’s College High School in Washington D.C. where he served as Athletic Director since 2014. During his tenure, the Cadets football team notched an overall record of 47-20, annually competing against one of the toughest schedules in the nation. The team won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship in 2017, and finished as runner-up twice (2016, 2019). Prior to St. John’s, Griffin was a vice president at IMG Academy from 2010-13 and was also a senior director of performance for Under Armour from 2007-10. 

“We are excited to welcome Brian back to IMG, and look forward to the future with him guiding the football program,” remarked IMG Academy Athletic Director Scott Dean. “He has incredible knowledge of the sports industry and the game of football at every level, and will no doubt continue the program’s positive momentum.”

Griffin earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business at Penn University in 1991. At Penn, he was a linebacker for the Quakers football program, a two-time defensive captain and recipient of the Edgar Church Memorial Award, presented to the student-athlete who made the most outstanding contribution to the team based on inspiration, courage and loyalty displayed toward the university and athletics program. He would go on to earn his master’s degree in sports leadership from Duquesne University, and is a certified performance training coach. 

Varsity Football launched at IMG Academy in 2013, and has emerged as a perennial national power, finishing in the national top-10 of the MaxPreps Xcellent25 and USA TODAY Super 25 rankings each of the past five seasons. In its history, 49 IMG players have been named as All-Americans, and over the past six signing classes, nearly 140 IMG student-athletes have committed and moved on to NCAA Bowl Subdivision programs.

I would like to see Pat Ward get the job, but his main focus could be with the football team. Looks like the school has hired an outside firm to handle the process. This is on the SJC website: 

St. John’s is seeking to fill the position of director of athletics effective immediately.

Reporting to the president and serving as a member of the leadership team, the director of athletics is responsible for implementing, coordinating and maintaining all athletic programs and curriculum for students in grades 9-12, including interscholastic competition in 29 sports over three seasons for a high school of 1,170 students.

Aligned with our mission statement, St. John’s athletic programs strive to hold our student-athletes to the highest standards and teach them to give one’s full effort, both toward individual progress and toward the development of the team. The director works closely with coaches and athletes to develop and sustain an athletic culture in which this vision is nourished.

Responsibilities include hiring, evaluating, developing and retaining an engaged and responsive coaching staff; developing, administering and assessing athletic programs to ensure alignment with the school’s Catholic Lasallian mission; overseeing the athletics department budget; addressing athlete and parent concerns; and cultivating an athletic culture that is aligned with the mission of excellence and strong character.
 
St. John’s is a member of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, known on a national level for the caliber of its athletic competition.
 
Position QualificationsThe successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills, strong problem-solving and organizational skills and dynamic interpersonal skills. Ideally, candidates should have prior experience as a teacher and coach, as well as five years of experience in athletic administration, preferably in an independent school, and a bachelor’s degree is required (master’s degree preferred).

SJC going out of the area/program to get a new AD? Sounds about right. Why not promote from within.......
