Rockville, MD---Georgetown Prep was struggling to move the ball for much of the game. The defense was doing its job all night limiting big plays and preventing Riverdale Baptist from really getting into a comfortable rhythm. The Little Hoyas, however, have their Special Teams unit to thank for the victory Friday night. The unheralded squad accounted for three touchdowns and a recovered onside kick.

“I’m very proud of the special team guys,” Head coach Dan Paro said. “We spent a lot of time on (Special teams).”

On the night Georgetown Prep utilized a stable of six players to run the ball, Jalen Hampton led the way with 90 yards on the ground, including a beautiful 25-yard tuck and run that was the Little Hoyas second touchdown of the night. Prep was able to outgain Riverdale Baptist 258-238 on the evening as well as win the turnover battle (+2). The outcome was never much in doubt as Georgetown Prep was able to capitalize on mistakes made by the Crusaders throughout the evening.

The floundering Riverdale Baptist squad missed tackles to prevent Drew Black from taking opening kickoff 96 yards to the house. Jalen Hampton took a handoff 25 yards a couple possessions later to make it 13-0.  The Crusaders put up their first and only touchdown of the half when Sadie Salawu ran the ball 16 yards into the endzone on a end around play.

The  second quarter was also when the Little Hoyas claimed their biggest swing and never looked back. On consecutive Riverdale Baptist punts, Georgetown Prep was able to block both punts. The first of which Connor Humiston ran back 38 yards for the second special teams touchdown of the game. After forcing a three-and-out on the ensuing drive, Jack Plank dove on the second blocked punt.

“For us we have to win the Special Teams battle,” Paro said. “We were struggling a little bit to drive the ball but they made the difference.

The Little Hoyas will face off against Benedictine (VA) in their next contest whole Riverdale Baptist will attempt to regroup against Central Virginia Homeschool.
